Jobs of the Future
The future workplace will be more of a gift-sharing place than that of a traditional workplace. In this space, humanity will share their unique gifts with the collective and mundane, stressful cubicle office jobs will be a thing of the past. The first steps toward this future began happening during Covid when we were forced to come up with speedy solutions as to how work was going to be conducted during the pandemic. Most office jobs went remote and while it had its initial challenges, most people (particularly women, and parents) enjoyed many benefits of working from home. No longer was there a need to commute, or to have child-care and people could spend more quality time with their families. Post-Covid, Corporate America had to adjust to these new preferences and many companies now only require office workers to come in 1-2 days per week. During lockdown, people began to go within themselves to reflect on their lives, work, health, dreams and futures and asked themselves questions like: What do I want to do with my life this brief time I am here? People realized that there must be more to life than just paying bills and having little or no vacation. Despite improved changes in the office space with remote work options, people – especially the youth – are far from satisfied with the current systems. They were born with a different “chip” or program than previous generations and they do not resonate with how just about everything is being run. They grew up with smartphones and tablets in their hands and they live most of their lives in the virtual world. They don’t prioritize the same things as the older generations, for instance, they don’t see themselves working decades for a company just to get health insurance, social security and a matching 401(k). They want to live now. Tomorrow is no guarantee (as we all painfully learned during Covid when we had time to reflect). Some people say that the young don’t want to work. However, it may just be that they want more soul-fulfilling better paying jobs that pay beyond just one's living expenses. Most are lucky if their current wages cover all the bills - which often they don’t - and this is where the high interest credit-cards come in with a bitter-sweet solution. And so, people have become trapped in a never-ending rat race where many work more and more hours without a promise of a better future. But not to despair – the future is actually going to be incredible! And here is how:
AI will be the catalyst of the 21st century that will replace a large percentage of our current jobs. This will give birth to an entire new era of jobs where humanity will be able to trade its expertise and talents with one another in a virtual exchange space as well as in person. On this platform, there will be different sectors that people can register their services such as, Education, Arts, Healthcare, Technology, and Entertainment to name a few. AI will take over many jobs that a robot can do just as well or even better than a human being. This is not to be feared – but celebrated! In the transitional stage of adding more robots and AI into the workplace - replacing workers - the government will set a minimum universal income. Also, the government and the private sector will offer education and training courses of new skills needed for our future society. The future workplace will be a mixture of doing jobs that are necessary for the collective and jobs where people share their talents and expertise with each other. For instance, people may be required to work 10 hours a week doing a job that is essential for the common good and that a robot or AI is unable to do. The remaining work hours of the week, people will assist others by providing services that they are uniquely skilled and qualified to do (and more important - that they are passionate about!) These can be services such as pet sitting a neighbor’s dog, assisting the elderly with errands, teaching children how to paint, help a person learn a specific sport and a million other things! A universal app/marketplace (like an Amazon-like platform) will be created where people can offer their services to the public and people in turn can go there for services needed. A new type of income system will be created where people will be paid on top of their base salary (the basic universal income) through a type of “good deeds” crypto currency. Governments will create jobs that are beneficial for the collective and for the earth such as, cleaning up neighborhoods, towns, cities and the world’s oceans from plastic and space junk.
Universal Basic Income
Since a large percentage of jobs will be taken by AI, Universal Basic Income (UBI) will be implemented globally as a social welfare system where all citizens of the world are given a minimum income in order to ensure the opportunity for everyone to thrive. Once UBI is carried out, the new system will allow us to create jobs where people share their unique expertise through virtual platforms and receive additional income from their contributions to the collective.
